Prolotherapy & Prolozone™ Therapy
Safe, Effective, Non-Surgical Relief For Chronic Pain
Do You Have Chronic Pain That Just Won’t Go Away?
Chronic pain can make life miserable for anyone who has it. Maybe a previously injured area still hurts or remains weak, even after a long period. In some cases there’s been no specific injury and you don’t know exactly what caused the problem. You may have tried rest, physical therapy, or manipulations. You may have even had cortisone injections that only gave temporary relief, or surgery that failed to completely resolve the problem. Proliferative therapies, including Prolotherapy, Prolozone™, and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy are little known but highly effective treatments that can permanently relieve chronic pain and restore function.
Dr. Thompson has successfully used proliferative therapy on a daily basis for 15 years to successfully treat hundreds of patients.
Damaged Connective Tissue is Often the Source of the Pain
Proliferative therapy works by helping the body repair damaged connective tissue in the problem area. Connective tissue includes the cartilage, ligaments, and tendons that cushion and/or stabilize and support our joints. Cartilage can be torn by sudden improper movements or just worn away from overuse and improper alignment. Accidents, sports injuries, or just plain overuse can cause ligaments and tendons to tear or lose elasticity and become like frayed ropes or lax rubber bands. Full or complete tears must be repaired surgically. However, much more common are micro-tears or general loss of tensile strength in these tissues. Weakened ligaments and tendons put a severe strain on the affected areas and joints causing pain, dysfunction, arthritis, damage to cartilage, and many other chronic problems. In addition to chronic pain, some other key symptoms that ligament or tendon damage is contributing to your problem:
- Popping, grinding, or clicking joint
- Frequent swelling
- Poor range of motion
- Weakness or instability
- Recurrent sprains
- Repeated joint dislocation
- Chronic muscle tightness or spasm
Proliferative Therapy Is The Only Direct Treatment Available for Damaged Connective Tissue
It involves the injection of natural substances into the affected area. When properly placed, these injections stimulate the release of growth factors and formation of new collagen in the affected area. The prefix “prolo” refers to this stage of new tissue growth or “proliferation.” As the body forms new collagen, the treated ligaments and tendons become thicker and stronger and more capable of doing their work. Proper alignment, stability, and function are restored, and typically the pain subsides.
There Are Three Different Forms of Proliferative Therapy in Use Today
Prolotherapy, the oldest and most widely used form of proliferative therapy, has been used since the 1930’s. Former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. C. Everett Koop strongly endorsed Prolotherapy after his chronic disabling back pain was cured using this treatment. With Prolotherapy, a natural substance such as dextrose is injected to purposefully provoke mild localized inflammation. This increases the blood supply and flow of nutrients to the area, and the body responds by regenerating the damaged structures.
Prolozone™ Therapy, a type of proliferative therapy pioneered by Dr. Frank Shallenberger, uses ozone, a naturally occurring form of oxygen with powerful regenerative capacity. Prolozone™ injections work by increasing circulation and oxygen to the damaged areas. In addition to strengthening ligaments and tendons, Prolozone™ may also help rebuild cartilage in the treated joint.
Platelet Rich Plasma Injection (PRP) Therapy uses the body’s own platelets for injection. A small amount of blood is drawn and centrifuged to separate out the plasma. The high concentration of platelets in the plasma is rich in bioactive proteins and growth factors that can accelerate tissue repair and regeneration. PRP is rapidly gaining popularity among professional athletes.
What You Can Expect
You must first be evaluated to determine if you are a candidate for proliferative therapy. If so, statistics indicate that over 80% of patients achieve good to excellent results. Many experience complete relief, even in severe or long-standing conditions. As with any medical treatment, results vary and depend on your current health status and lifestyle factors. On average 3-10 sessions are required. More may be needed for difficult problems, or if the patient continues to overuse the affected area. Treatments should be generally performed every 1-4 weeks, depending on which area of the body is being treated, and which form of proliferative therapy is being used.
