Regenerative Medicine

What is regenerative medicine?

The field of regenerative medicine covers a variety of methods with its main intent to replace and repair tissue and organs that have been damaged by disease, injury/trauma, or congenital reasons. While traditional medicine focuses on addressing symptoms, regenerative medicine tools go to the source of why the tissue or organ is not functioning properly.

Desert Oasis Clinic’s approach to regenerative medicine employs the biologics methods of Stem Cell Therapy and Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) to regenerate or replace human cells and/or tissue. Whether it is treating hair loss or addressing an orthopedic injury, both stem cell therapy and PRP can bring about positive results.

How does Stem Cell Therapy work?

Each person has adult stem cells, and our body uses these stem cells to repair itself. Stem cells can be collected from fat deposits and bone marrow. Other sources may include dental pulp and skeletal muscle. Stem cells are unspecialized cells, meaning they are not restricted by having tissue-specific capacities and can be used to replace damaged specialized cells.

Once the stem cells are extracted, they are used to create a concentrated solution that is then injected into the problem or damaged area. The stem cells enter the area to replace the needed specialized cells to spark a healing response. It has been shown that stem cells can also form new tissue the body needs.

What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Like stem cell therapy, PRP is another distinct regenerative medicine modality. One of the many components in our blood is platelets which are responsible for helping the body heal when injured. PRP involves taking the patient’s platelet-rich plasma from a blood sample and then using the plasma’s healing properties to treat an injury or medical condition.

The PRP is used to accelerate the healing process after surgery or an injury that is slow to heal. The healing responses are triggered due to a high concentration of PRP is injected in the problem area, allowing the platelets to address and correct the issues causing the patient’s symptoms. In some cases, PRP has done away with the need for surgery.

Conditions Treated by Stem Cell Therapy & PRP:

Both modalities have shown promising results in the treatment of chronic pain, stiffness, limited mobility, and swelling associated with conditions such as:

  • Rotator cuff tear
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • ACL tear
  • Tennis elbow
  • Ankle sprain
  • Tendonitis
  • Sprains and strains

Benefits of regenerative medicine

  • Avoiding surgery
  • Recovery time is brief due to accelerated healing
  • No need for general anesthesia
  • Low risk, given the patient’s own cells and platelets are used
